Are You Hot Wired?

Have you ever “toasted” an electric drill while doing a mechanical cleaning or breaking out flue tiles? One of our customers was going through drills every couple of months and kept blaming the drill manufacture. To solve the problem, they kept buying bigger and more expensive drills. The bigger drills actually demand more AMPS.

Think of AMPS as the volume of electricity moving through the wire, while VOLTAGE is like the pressure that pushes the AMPS.

When using an extension cord, you MUST have sufficient voltage and AMPS to properly supply the electric appliance in use, or it’s only a matter of time until you “toast it.”

Resistance within the extension cord is what causes the delivered AMPS to drop. Both smaller gauge of the wire and longer length of the extension cord increase the resistance, which in turn reduces the amount of delivered AMPS.

If you are using a 5AMP drill plugged into a 120 Volt outlet your drill will work fine. But remember, when you add a 25’ extension cord you will get more resistance and the delivered AMPS will go down. Using a 50’ or 100’ extension cord adds even more resistance. Using a smaller gauge extension cord will further increase the resistance. The 120 Volt “pressure” will remain the same, but the further it has to push the AMPS leads to more resistance and less AMPS delivered.

When the 5 AMP drill is only getting 2-1/2 or 3 AMPS delivered, it will run slower. Its internal cooling system will also run about half speed, which eventually will cause the armatures to overheat and “burn out.”
Always be sure to use the correct gauge extension cord for the appliance in use. Try to reduce the length of the extension cord run as much as possible. You might even want to buy a hand held voltage meter to check and see how many volts you are getting at the end of the extension cord before you start.

Remember, buying and using the right size extension cord is a lot cheaper than buying new drills!
