Your Reputation & What Kind of Business are You in?
Reputation as defined by the dictionary is: “overall quality of character as seen or judged by people in general,” or “a place in public esteem or regard: good name.”
As the “busy season” descends upon us it is very easy to make a lot of money in a short amount of time. History tells us our customer’s request they have their chimneys and fireplaces inspected and repaired before the cold weather sets in. They don’t seem to mind paying inflated prices because they really don’t have too many other options.
While this might be true, gouging your customers at this time also gives you a great opportunity to destroy your valued reputation that took you a long time to build.
Take a step back, and look at the big picture. Don’t use your great reputation to get as much as you can right now. It will cost you in the long run. Instead, try to protect your company’s valued reputation and your own future as well.
What kind of Business are you in?
Ask anyone what kind of business they’re in and they’ll instinctively tell you the name of the commodity they sell. “We’re in the carpeting business, we’re in the kitchen cabinet business,” or maybe they will say “we’re in the chimney business.” They will almost always tell you the commodity never the product.
The difference is a commodity is something you can touch with your hands, a product is something your customer feels when you leave their home. It’s not the SS furnace flue liner (commodity) you installed, but rather the sense of security (product) that they feel knowing that they are now safe from potential carbon monoxide poisoning.
Understanding the difference between the two is what developing a successful business is all about.
“Energy Top”
U.S. Fireplace Products, manufacturer of the unmatched quality “Sealtight Damper” informs us that they are boxing the “Energy Top.” We’re excited about this new vertical action damper. Unlike their competition, both the Energy Top and the Sealtight are completely made and assembled in the USA. Look for them both in our upcoming new Lindemann Catalog.
