     Labor Day
Let's see - - end of summer, empty the wading pool, start of school, football begins, extra day off, picnics.  So why L-A-B-O-R Day?

Labor Day is a holiday in disguise.  At best, it's somewhat of a nebulous holiday.  For example, some people (usually politicians or academic types) know it is a day to recognize and honor the American Labor Movement.  While other people think of it as just an extra day off from work with pay.  Still others (and you know who they are) have absolutely no idea what they are supposed to be celebrating, but think it might have something to do with a groundhog coming out of a hole to look for it's shadow!

In accordance with the Central Labor Union (CLU), the first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on Tuesday September 5, 1882.  The CLU held it's second Labor Day holiday a year later, on Wednesday September 5, 1883.  Labor Day became a national holiday in 1894 on a bill signed by President Cleveland.

In order to obtain the things we now sometimes take for granted --like the eight-hour workday  and the right to collective bargaining.  Past labor members gave their time and put their jobs, even their lives on the line.  They suffered through harassment and bodily harm, not only by the hand of the company “goons,” but by the police and National Guard as well.

“Labor Day differs in every essential way from other holidays of the year in any country,” said Samuel Gompers, founder and longtime president of the American Federation of Labor.  All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another.  Labor Day…is devoted to no man, living or dead, to sect, race, or nation.”

All of us here at Lindemann Chimney Supply hope that Labor Day will have much more meaning for you this year and every future year.

   Antioxidants

Taking antioxidants is one of the best ways to promote good health, and many people go out of their way to ensure they get enough of them every day.  But, did you know that…Coffee has more antioxidants than any other food or beverage in the American diet?  The Average Adult receives more than four times the amount of antioxidants from coffee-regular or decaf-daily than from black tea (the second most consumed source), followed by chocolate, bananas, beans, and corn.

  A Drink A Day

While you “can get too much of a good thing” (like a dozen cups of coffee or a dozen alcoholic drinks), an alcoholic drink is also good for your health.

A recent study:  People who drink one alcoholic drink a day, including wine, beer, and mixed drinks are 54% less likely to be obese than those who don't drink at all.  Those who drink two drinks are 41% less likely to be obese.  But, don't over do it - people who drink four or more drinks a day are 46% more likely to be obese than non-drinkers.  Binge drinkers, who sometimes have five or more drinks per day, are 80% more likely to be obese.  So “too much of a good thing” can be bad for you.

A road to a friend's house is never long.
